My sister once told me that it would be a lot easier if there weren’t TV shows distracting her and I found the same issue this last week as I tried to study. However, Netflix’s newest season of Bridgerton drew my attention like no other.
I have been told that watching TV with me, is not always easy because I will sit there and point out plotholes in the writing. I always tell people, that just blame the writer in me. If I have to spend what feels like 1,000s of hours trying to make sure there are no plotholes in my writing, the least a TV writer can do is return the favor.
However, there are a few shows that beat my distaste for plotholes and Bridgerton is one of them. For some reason, I can overlook some of the poor pacing and plotholes to just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Maybe it is because the show is built around romance novels which lean into their simplicity and embrace it for what it is. There are no fantasy names to wonder how to pronounce or complex political warfare. It is simply about two people growing to love each other and I soaked it up.
So did I get a lot of writing done this week? Not exactly, I am still working on my poetry and the outline of my next novel. But did I get more inspiration for how to incorporate romance into things, yes. So is it a win-win in the end? I think so. My studies on the other hand may say otherwise. But then again that is a story for a different day.
And honestly, it is not the writer’s fault that every so often a show comes on that viewers just adore, we see the work and effort behind the story and we bond with it. I am sure we all have our comfort shows whether it be creepy criminal dramas like Criminal Minds or fun sitcoms like Friends that no matter how many times we watch it, it just doesn’t grow old. It is the beauty of TV in a way, bringing people together. I can remember the excitement for the series final and the next season growing up or the racing from the bathroom so you did not miss a single second.
So, if you have not checked out Netflix’s Bridgertons, I recommend it. I think is a finer adventure. But even if that is not your cup of tea, I am sure we all know that feeling of sitting down and watching our favorite shows and movies. As writers, we get inspired by each other. So to see just bright new or different ideas is always fun.
Hopefully, next week, I will have some updates on my own writing. But as always, thank you to all who support!
