Saturday Newsletter: Bhool Bhulaiya 3

Happy Saturday to everyone! Hope everyone had a good Halloween. Today let us talk about Bhool Bhulaiya 3 which is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language comedy horror film and the film that I get to see this evening in Theaters.

Not only will this be the first Hindi movie I will see in Theater but it will also be the second movie I see in Barbados at their local theater. I am not sure why I have never been more despite living here for more than a year. Maybe it was because of Medical School or perhaps it was because the one theater I went to got shut down which left me weary to go to the other one. Usually, I spend my movie nights on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Barbados has more options on Netflix because companies like HBO do not have streaming rights so I can watch HBO movies on Netflix here.

I only have started to watch Hindi movies recently but I do enjoy them. While I have started to watch more of their horror films there is a stark difference between American Horror and Hindi Horror. It is not exactly a bad difference. Both movies are good in their own rights. Movies like Stree 2 and Bhool Bhulaiya are a crazy good time but they do lack that scary factor of like Sinster and Halloween. American Horror is created to build fear while Hindi Horror is designed more to have a scary good time.

They honestly have their own time and place and if you are ever curious about going to watch a Hindi movie or if you saw a horror movie, I think there is a certain magic to them. While I am not a big fan of gore or over-the-top kills, I am a fan of the crafted storylines in that viewers find themselves cheering on the hero whether it be a final girl or misfit. A good horror movie is like a Western movie, at the core of the film, it is a simple plot overlay with good characters and a few twists. Honestly, I think horror sometimes gets a bad rap because people do not like to be scared but horror itself is a broad topic. There can be subjects weaved into them for everyone. If you like action, there are action horror movies where it is a race against time. If you like romance, there are plenty of horror movies that have subplots of romance. And if you just want a movie with a good scare there is. That is the beauty of horror, you can blend it with other genres and make something for anyone.

Take a look at the Monster House film. A film that was equally both for the kids and the adults where it was scary enough for the kids and creepy enough to even get the adults leaning back in their seats and sweating a bit.

While Bhool Bhulaiya 2 was my first intro to Hindi horror and I found myself a little taken back at how this was called horror when it didn’t lean into the typical horror scenes. I also learned to just love the movie for what it was. A mystery around a set of ghosts that had you guessing as to what the plot was. I have not seen the first movie but that is also part of the wonderfulness of these films. Anyone can join in at any time.

So whether your cup of tea when it comes to horror is Monsters or ghosts or demons, be sure to be curious about other countries and how they see the world of horror. It will truly open your eyes. Some of the Indonesian Horror movies have scared me more than American movies. It is exciting to see different ways of the genres being brought to life.
